On Sunday night, February 28th 1999, Steve Mikita appeared on “60 Minutes”. Steve shared his inpirational and motivational perspective of living with a devastating muscle disease. Steve was shown delivering a speech to a captivated audience in San Diego, which included lessons taught by his parents which are “stronger than muscles.”

Steve was very pleased with the segment and stated, “This peice demonstrated that many of use with these diseases are choosing life, not death”. Mikita went on to say, “it shows the world that we are not living meaningless lives but flourishing, despite our ever – weakening bodies. Our spirits and attitueds transcend the most overwhelming circumstances.”

Referring to his interview with Mike Wallace, Steve responded, “It was an honor and the thrill of a lifetime to meet and discuss my life with one of the greatest journalists in television history.” Mikita stated, “We were supposed to spend on 30 minues together, but after an hour and ten minutes they had run out of video tape.” Mikita described Wallace as “one of the most charming and charismatic people I have ever met.” Steve said, that “Mike Wallace is a tenacious interviewer, but, I found him to be as fair as he is tough. He truly listened to my responses. He made me fell more comfortable than any previous interviewer. I instantly liked him. One of the greatest memories for me was that several times during the interview my glasses would slip down my nose. Mr. Wallace, without any hesitation, would simply push them back into place. Mike Wallace is not only a great interrogator, he is a great and compassionate human being.”
